Who are you and what business did you start?

My name is Ethan Spencer. I’m an esports producer by day and a sweaty sleeper by night.

Working on live broadcasts is an exhausting process and getting a good night’s sleep was always super important for my job. I struggled to sleep comfortably. I loved my weighted blanket, but I hated how hot it would make it.

I tried other weighted blankets that said they’d cool me down using cooling fabrics, but those never cooled for real. So I set off to make my own weighted blanket that actually kept itself cool. That’s how I landed on FrioQuilt.

My typical day currently is marketing the blanket. We’re on Kickstarter now and hoping to reach a small goal in order to fund our manufacturing plans.

For the past few months, I’ve worked with my dad to get the FrioQuilt just right. We worked with different manufacturers on designs. We finally landed on the right design and combo, and our tester unit has been keeping me cool ever since. He’s also a patent attorney, so we have a patent pending.

Walk us through the process of creating FrioQuilt.

This is my first product created. I started with the big design ideas necessary for our goal–a cooling, weighted blanket–and slowly began chipping away. Detail after detail, I uncovered the final design.

We ordered a bunch of units from different manufacturing companies ranging from here in the US, to overseas, to trying to make one ourselves! We landed on the right fit and have worked with them ever since.

How did you launch the Kickstarter campaign?

We launched at the end of October, a few days ago. While working on the design, we had been building a small Facebook community around our goals. Soon enough, we had 2,000 people interested in what we had to offer. When we launched, we had that community of interested folk ready to support us.

We do have a website, but it isn’t a priority currently to make it look the best. Our sights are set on finding interested supporters for the product, and then we’ll move resources over to our website.

What apps and tools are most important to your business?

Kickstarter – Where our project is being supported

Facebook – Where we grew a small community of people interested in our blanket

What’s been the biggest business challenge you’ve overcome?

My dad and I are a very small team that are currently doing EVERYTHING. We know how to use our resources wisely, and when needed, we know how to grow our team to fit the needs of the company.

My dad and I believe personalized climate control technologies are incredibly important as we take steps to reduce energy usage. FrioQuilt is a more eco-friendly cooling alternative than cranking the AC at night!

Do you have any advice for other entrepreneurs?

My biggest tip to entrepreneurs would be to figure out the main goal of your project, and always strive to meet those goals. It’s far too easy to get caught in the details and forget what the true purpose was from the start.

How are things today and what are your plans for the future?

FrioQuilt launched only a few days ago and we’re already 30% of the way to being successfully funded on Kickstarter. We appreciate all the support we’ve gotten already and look forward to getting FrioQuilt into homes around the world!
