Who are you and what business did you start?
My name is George, and from the darkest depths of my brain, I pulled out The Insults Game.
I always loved playing computer and tabletop games with friends and family, but I realised that the fun of playing isn’t necessarily the games themselves… it’s the banter, insults and laughs that fly back and forth when you’re competing to win.
So I wanted to create a game that focuses solely on maximising this banter. Thus, The Insults Game was born.
The concept is simple – combine rude words using playing cards to create unique and personal insults for your mates.
As you might imagine, many of the insults you can create are too “adult” to be uploaded online.
Whilst other rude card games do exist, there isn’t one that pushes the boundaries in such a personally-offensive way. So, I guess what I’m saying is, there isn’t a game that will abuse you quite like The Insults Game…
Walk us through the process of creating The Insults Game.
I’ve casually created new games in the past, or put my own twist on existing games, so when it came to producing The Insults Game, I was in familiar territory. I designed the cards for The Insults Game myself, and went to a supplier I had previously used for printing individual units. Then I tested the game, implemented changes and improvements, and the cycle went on until I was happy with the final product.
On top of this, my brother is a software developer, and we’ve worked together to make mobile apps in the past. The process we are going through to make an app version of The Insults Game is no different – I have designed the wireframes, and my brother is currently bringing those designs to life. So there is a two-pronged strategy to our offense…
How did you launch the Kickstarter campaign?
I launched towards the end of October, in order to get the game out in time for Christmas.
The launch was strong, since I’d spread the word across multiple social circles, but as with many Kickstarter campaigns, the pledges started to slow down a bit.
The focus is now on getting the word out to wider audiences via a range of digital marketing campaigns, including improving our presence on social media, running advertising campaigns, and building a subscription channel.
There is a website for The Insults Game, but it hasn’t been a major priority thus far.
What apps and tools are most important to your business?
Adobe Illustrator – for designing the cards and the mobile app.
GetResponse – for creating and managing an email-subscription channel.
Social Media – including Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, for advertising and interacting with our customers.
WordPress – for designing the website.
What are your sources of inspiration?
The term “banter” can sometimes be used as a mask for bullying, but in most cases, it is simply the hilarious and witty abuse between friends. That’s what The Insults Game is all about.
Unfortunately, there are certain “snowflake” movements that get offended on other people’s behalf. They are trying to encroach on our freedom of speech, and suppress what we are allowed to laugh at.
The Insults Game is as much about standing up to these poisonous movements, as it is about engaging and laughing with the people around you.
What’s been the biggest business challenge you’ve overcome?
One word – publicity. It has been a new and exciting challenge trying to gain publicity, and the entire experience of launching a Kickstarter campaign has taught me about the many different channels that are at my disposal.
In hindsight, I would have focused on marketing channels earlier, in order to reduce my reliance on social circles for that initial funding boost, and reduce the impact that a decline in pledges can have on my chances of hitting my funding target.
Do you have any advice for other entrepreneurs?
Don’t be scared of failure. For me, diving into the deep end was the right move. It’s so easy to get stuck over-preparing and planning and researching. Even if I don’t hit my target, I’m now familiarized with the process, I’m able to learn from my mistakes, and I can try again – either with this project, or a new one – with a much higher chance of success.
How are things today and what are your plans for the future?
The Insults Game has raised 20% of its target with two weeks left to go, so it’s going to be a big push to reach my goal. However, engagement with prospective customers has been largely positive, so I will continue to put everything into The Insults Game, even after the Kickstarter campaign ends, especially with the mobile app coming out soon.
